# Placeholders

## Account and global placeholders

A placeholder inserts a value into a text pattern. Text outside placeholders
stays unchanged. The surrounding markers control encoding:

- `*account[username]*` inserts the value as-is.
- `%account[username]%` applies the encoding configured for the context, such as
URL encoding when building a URL.

| Placeholder | Value |
| --- | --- |
| `*account[fieldName]*` | The named field from the selected account's Account XML. |
| `*global[fieldName]*` | The named global provisioning value, when available. |
| `*appName*` | The application name, which may be localized. |
| `*globalUsername*` | The username used for the initial application sign-in. This may differ from the line username. |

Values must be available in the app. An unknown placeholder is left unchanged,
including its markers. Use `**` to display a literal asterisk.

See the [global parameter reference](reporting/intro.md#global-parameters) for
additional app and device values.

For supported account-label configuration and examples, see
[Customizing the account title](../guides/customizing-account-title.md).
